Eramet Biodiversity Day took place on Friday in the heart of our Lékédi Biodiversity Foundation park in Bakoumba, Gabon. This annual event organized by the Foundation offers a unique opportunity for meetings, conferences, and sharing among scientific experts, institutions, and national and international partners.

As a sign of its significant contribution to biodiversity conservation in Gabon, this third edition has been held in the presence of Brigadier General Maurice Ntossui Allogo, Minister of Water and Forests, Mrs. Arcadie Svetlana Minguengui Ndomba, Minister of Environment, Climate, and Human-Wildlife Conflict, and Mrs. Clarisse Anguezomo Nguema, Deputy Inspector General of Services in charge of Education.

Eramet is a responsible and civic-minded company, whose commitments to preserving nature are recognized by civil society on an international scale. Through the Lékédi Biodiversity Foundation, we offer a unique project for a mining company: dedicating 14,000 hectares to the conservation and preservation of biodiversity, scientific research and experimentation, as well as training future generations. This day confirms our ambition to transform the Foundation into a global reference for biodiversity preservation.

A realization of Eramet’s commitments to biodiversity beyond its mining activities

This day demonstrates the Eramet group’s ambition to contribute, beyond its mining activities, to the major goals and targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework adopted at the Kunming-Montreal COP15 in 2022.

After actfornature international in July 2024, the quality of Eramet’s commitments to biodiversity, beyond its mining activities, was confirmed by the international association Business for Nature as part of its It’s Now for Nature campaign.

These commitments include:

  • Developing a foundation dedicated to biodiversity, with a conservation and preservation area, and research programs with scientific partnerships.
  • Raising awareness and training internal and external stakeholders on biodiversity issues, including an environmental education program in Gabon, an annual Foundation day dedicated to biodiversity, as well as raising awareness among employees and training managers and biodiversity referents at all Eramet mining sites.

Gabon Green Generation by Lékédi: An Innovative Training Program for Middle and High School Students

Designed in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and with the support of the National Pedagogical Institute (IPN), this innovative program aims to encourage and promote the engagement of young Gabonese in biodiversity conservation in Gabon.

It plans to raise awareness and train 1,200 third and second-year students from four high schools located in Moanda and Bakoumba, with four objectives:

  • Train young people in good environmental practices to encourage them to adopt daily actions that favor environmental protection.
  • Highlight Gabon’s forests and biodiversity by emphasizing the richness of its ecosystems and the importance of their conservation.
  • Raise awareness about biodiversity erosion and the challenges of climate change by developing an understanding of current and future environmental threats.
  • Familiarize young people with environmental and green entrepreneurship careers to encourage them to consider careers in this sector.
