Manganese: an essential metal

Known since ancient times as a coloring agent for glass and ceramics, manganese is the fourth most widely used metal in the world, after iron, aluminum and copper. Steel is the main market for its use, accounting for 90% of manganese consumption.

Carbon steel production

Incorporated into steel in the form of ferromanganese or silicomanganese alloys, manganese increases strength and wear resistance. It also has deoxidizing properties.

Batteries and cells

The main non-metallurgical sector in terms of manganese use is the household battery industry. Manganese alloys are essential to the construction industry (rails, beams) and the automotive industry (body sheet metal, etc.).

Comprehensive command of the value chain: extraction, processing, transportation

Through our subsidiary Comilog in Gabon, our manganese ore is extracted from the Moanda mines, the world’s largest manganese mines.

Setrag, a Comilog subsidiary, operates a rail network linking eastern and western Gabon. This rail network carries passengers, goods, and forestry products, as well as Comilog’s ore and metallurgical products.

These are then transported to the Group’s processing plants. Eramet’s manganese alloy production facilities are located on three continents:

Comilog: the leading producer of high-grade manganese ore worldwide

Setrag: a key player in Gabonese transport

Comilog Dunkerque: French-made silicomanganese

Eramet Marietta: a strategic location in the United States

Eramet Norway: a world leader in refined manganese alloys

Our products: a CO2 footprint lower than the industry average

Eramet’s manganese processing activity has one of the lowest emission rates in the industry (57% lower than the industry average, according to a study by CRU consulting), thanks to the use of hydroelectric power at its industrial sites in Norway and Gabon, and decarbonized energy in France.

Industrial tests using bioreducers are under way at our Norwegian facilities, offering new prospects for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These bioreducers are produced using biomass, such as wood waste.

Our manganese alloys

Eramet is the world’s second-largest producer of manganese alloys.

Our manganese ores

At its Moanda mine, Comilog, a subsidiary of the Eramet Group, produces a range of high-grade manganese oxide ores.

Eramet, a civic-minded company in Gabon

Through its subsidiaries Comilog and Setrag, Eramet is the largest private employer in Gabon. Mindful of the responsibility this entails, we attach strategic importance to the preservation of the environment and biodiversity, as well as to local economic development, in close cooperation with local communities and authorities.

At its new Okouma mine, for example, Comilog has set aside 10% of the plateau to preserve biodiversity.
