Manganese: an essential metal
Known since ancient times as a coloring agent for glass and ceramics, manganese is the fourth most widely used metal in the world, after iron, aluminum and copper. Steel is the main market for its use, accounting for 90% of manganese consumption.
Comprehensive command of the value chain: extraction, processing, transportation
Through our subsidiary Comilog in Gabon, our manganese ore is extracted from the Moanda mines, the world’s largest manganese mines.
Setrag, a Comilog subsidiary, operates a rail network linking eastern and western Gabon. This rail network carries passengers, goods, and forestry products, as well as Comilog’s ore and metallurgical products.
These are then transported to the Group’s processing plants. Eramet’s manganese alloy production facilities are located on three continents:
- Eramet Marietta (United States)
- Eramet Norway (Norway)
- Comilog Dunkerque (France)
- Comilog (Gabon) with its Moanda Metallurgical Complex (CMM) and Moanda Industrial Complex (CIM).
Our products: a CO2 footprint lower than the industry average
Eramet’s manganese processing activity has one of the lowest emission rates in the industry (57% lower than the industry average, according to a study by CRU consulting), thanks to the use of hydroelectric power at its industrial sites in Norway and Gabon, and decarbonized energy in France.
Industrial tests using bioreducers are under way at our Norwegian facilities, offering new prospects for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These bioreducers are produced using biomass, such as wood waste.
Success story
When Kleber Silva visited the Moanda mine for the first time in March 2018, he was surprised to see residual ore on some of the sites. "Too rocky to be processed with our current facilities," he was told. "No stone shall be unturned," he responded. Not wanting to waste the resource, the new head [...]
