Lithium at the heart of the energy transition
The energy transition reduces the use of fossil fuels, but requires more metals, in particular to store energy in batteries. Lithium is one of the main strategic metals for battery manufacture, along with nickel, cobalt and manganese. According to the International Energy Agency, global demand for lithium could increase four- or six-fold by 2030 (representing annual production of 500 kt).
Our expertise in lithium mining and production
An essential component of electric batteries, lithium is a metal of the future, in which Eramet is investing with one ambition: to become a leading global producer of metals for the energy transition.
In Argentina, starting in November 2024, Eramet will operate a lithium production plant designed to extract and produce 24,000 t of battery-grade lithium carbonate per year at full capacity, thanks to an exclusive extraction process developed by our R&D teams. Through this project, Eramet aims to :
- Securing a significant share of the very high demand for lithium for our customers, particularly in Europe, to support electro-mobility.
- Operate to the highest standards of responsible mining (IRMA guidelines), including all environmental, social and governance aspects.
Commissioned in July 2024, the plant is scheduled to deliver its first production run in November 2024. A feasibility study is underway to achieve a total annual production of around 30 additional kilotonnes.
In France, we are pursuing our Ageli project in partnership with Electricité de Strasbourg to extract lithium from Alsace’s geothermal brines.
Ageli: French lithium for electric vehicle batteries
In January 2023, Eramet and Electricité de Strasbourg (ES) signed an exclusive memorandum of understanding to jointly study the development of lithium production in Alsace from geothermal brine, in the commune of Rittershoffen.
The Group is contributing its unique and innovative direct lithium extraction process, developed in Argentina, to this project, with the ambition of strengthening French and European sovereignty in lithium supply, a critical element in the battery value chain.
